Abigail Nielson - Pre-service English Teacher

Abigail's mission with this blog is to seek out how and why technology enhances student learning--with a special focus on writing in secondary education English classrooms. She also seeks to identify some specific ways to incorporate technology into the curriculum.

She is originally from Mesa, Arizona, and lived there from the time she was born through the eighth grade. Her family then moved to Midway, Utah, where she attended high school. Abigail always had a passion for reading and writing, but that interest waned throughout high school when classes failed to fully capture her attention. After beginning her studies at Brigham Young University, she remembered her previous passion for reading and writing when taking some composition classes that fascinated her. Recognizing that attention and motivation are huge factors in student success, she now questions what role technology might play in contributing to those factors.

Abigail is in her senior year of a BA in English Education. Her Digital Humanities Minor contributes to her interest in finding out some of the hows and whys of technology in the classroom. She is currently employed as a marketing assistant for Bellago Homes, as well as a teacher's assistant for the introductory Women's Studies course at BYU. She was previously employed as a teacher's assistant for Multicultural Education for Secondary Education. There she developed a passion for multicultural education and teaching for social justice. She feels very strongly that race, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and ability play a serious role for individual students in the classroom. These factors affect students’ confidence and ability to engage with texts, complete assignments, interact with peers, interpret material, and write effectively. If students feel safe, welcome, and loved, then they are more likely to participate and more likely to learn while in school.
